The ability to taste Thiourea and Phenylthiocarbamide is genetic.
These PTC (Thiourea-Phenylthiocarbamide) Taste Papers are either bitter or tasteless depending on the genetics & heredity of taster. Give students the opportunity to discover whether they are a taster or non-taster in comparison with the rest of the class.
- Each individual should take the taste test only once.
- Paper strip dimensions 9mm x 50mm (25 strips on each pad).
- Pack of 100 strips
A non-laboratory classroom should ideally be used for the taste test, ensuring students have clean hands and use clean, sterile forceps to handle the strips.
Please note: the date on the label is the production date, not an expiry date.
- Suitable for students in Year 7 onwards.
- Key Stage 3 to A-Level Biology: Genetics
- A non-laboratory should ideally be used for the taste test, ensuring students have clean hands and use clean, sterile forceps to handle the strips.
- Limit the supply to 1 strip per student.
- Supply a beaker of 1% Virkon for strip disposal. Strips can then be wrapped in a plastic bag and placed into the normal refuse.
